Shine by Lauren Myracle

It must be the cold nights, gray days or something in the water. I keep choosing books to read that keep me up at night. Shine is a work of fiction, but could have been taken from a current newspaper headline. Cat's friend, Patrick, is the victim of a hate crime and the small town sheriff seems determinded to call it a random crime by out of towners. Cat doesn't believe that and starts to ask questions. As she digs deeper, secrets are uncovered that seem almost too much for one person to carry. At the same time, Cat slowly brings her own secrets to the surface creating even more tension. Can't sleep? Looking for a page turner? This might be the book for you. Recommended for older teens.

Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick

Are you looking for a short, intense thriller? Revolver might be the book for you. It's an historical mystery/thriller set at the turn of the century 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. 14 year-old Sig is waiting in the cabin with his dead father when a huge, menacing man appears at the door. He's carrying a colt revolver, but Sig knows there's a hidden one in the storeroom. Will he be able to use it? Will he actually kill a man? I read this book in one sitting...drinking hot chocolate the whole time.

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda

Reading The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger was a breath of fresh air among all the vampire, fallen angels, and teen angsty books I've been reading. I laughed out loud!(Thank you, Mr. Angleberger.) Dwight, a sixth grader, has crafted an origami yoda finger puppet that gives amazingly strange, yet accurate advice. And, Dwight is not known for his insight, in fact, he's considered totally clueless by his peers. The book reads almost like a diary, with different students telling their stories of how origami yoda helped them. The big question, "Is origami yoda real?" drives the story. It's a middle school story, but anyone who loves Star Wars needs to read this book. And, with instructions in the back, make your own origami yoda. Here's a photo of some members of the PT high school book club, Readers Anonymous, with their creations.
